What will I study?
The Foundation Year Health Sciences papers are Academic English, Biology, Chemistry, Epidemiology, Mathematics and Physics. You can access detailed information on each of the papers by clicking on the Health Sciences stream link.
You will be taught in lecture theatres and laboratories on campus, helping you familiarise yourself with the University environment.
Classes will consist of:
- Lectures with up to 200 students,
- Tutorials of up to 16 students, and
- Laboratories of approximately 60 students
Your classmates will include both New Zealand and international students from a wide variety of other backgrounds. Mixing and studying with other students is very much a part of the vibrancy and culture of Dunedin’s University city – many Otago graduates report that this is where they made friends for life!
The Health Sciences stream in the Foundation Year is a recommended pathway to prepare students for the challenging Health Sciences First Year (you only get one attempt at this as an undergraduate student!).
The teachers at Foundation Year have designed their papers to prepare you for all aspects of university study - from essay writing, research projects and practical laboratory work, to what to expect when you are being taught in a large-group lecture or small-group tutorial.
You will have many opportunities to have one-on-one contact with your teachers outside formal classroom times.
