Welcome

Welcome to the Pacific Islands and Student Support Unit (PIRSSU) in the Division of Health Sciences. The Division has over 200 Pacific students studying in Medicine, Physiotherapy, Dentistry, Pharmacy and the Otago School of Medical Sciences. We aim to increase the number of Pacific students in health sciences, and improve the completion rates for all students. The Division of Health Sciences has a Pacific Strategic Framework which guides Pacific developments. There are six areas of focus. These are :

  • Demonstrate and value leadership on Pacific matters
  • Enhance capability
  • Encourage Pacific research excellence - click here to see our research
  • Strengthen community engagement
  • Develop Pacific curriculum
  • Contribute to the Pacific regional and international progress

We are keen to engage with Pacific communities, schools, career advisors, government and non-government organisations to help us improve academic outcomes for Pacific students at tertiary level. The Pacific Islands Health Professional Students Association (PIHPSA) was established in 2006. It is an excellent student organisation. PIHPSA works collaboratively with staff and the community in the provision of support for students. PIRSSU exists to ensure students, their families and communities achieve their hopes and aspirations for a better future in Aotearoa.

Dare to Succeed, Dare to Excel and Dare to Care…
