About Us

The Pacific Islands Research & Student Support Unit (PIRSSU) is located within the Division of Health Sciences at the University of Otago. The Division of Health Sciences is the largest provider of health education training in New Zealand. PIRSSU assists in the recruitment, retention and support of Pacific students into health professional and health related courses. Our research focuses on recruitment, student engagement and transition, improving academic achievement and evaluation of support programmes. The Associate Dean (Pacific) is the head of the Unit, and coordinates Pacific strategic developments in the Division of Health Sciences.

The Pacific Strategic Framework guides strategic developments within the Division. The Pacific Strategic Group, chaired by the Pro Vice-Chancellor drives strategic directions and developments. The Associate Dean (Pacific), chairs the Pacific Students’ Support Staff Group which coordinates pastoral and academic support for Pacific students. Members of these groups are nominated by the Deans within the Division of Health Sciences.

The Pacific Islands Health Professional Students’ Association (PIHPSA) is an excellent student organisation in the Division. It works collaboratively with PIRSSU to provide support and develop networks for students. The Division works collaboratively with the University of Otago Pacific Islands Centre, Student Learning Centre and other internal and external groups to ensure students are able to achieve their goals at University.

Dare to be wise…

Dare to Dream…

Dare to Care!
