Dental Simulation lab

Bulletin Issue 21, October 2009

A simulation lab being installed at the Dental School will provide state-of-the-art teaching opportunities.

Each bench in the 73-chair lab will feature a mannequin torso complete with removable jaw, along with an individual video screen, allowing students to follow a teaching demonstration as it occurs.

The other advantage of the new lab is that it will free up the School’s Dental Clinics for patients. Currently the clinics must be unavailable while students work on mannequins.

Associate Dean for Facilities and Clinical Services Dr Warwick Duncan says the $3.75 million lab is just one initiative the School is undertaking to combat a lack of space and modernise its facilities.

They are also installing a digital x-ray unit for teaching, to gradually replace the plain film technology, and teaching students about digital filing, to begin to replace paper files within the School.

It is hoped the new lab will be operational by the end of January.
