What are the Health Sciences?
The Division of Health Sciences consists of the Faculty of Medicine, which administers the School of Medical Sciences and three clinical Schools of Medicine located in Christchurch, Dunedin and Wellington, and the Schools of Dentistry, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy.

MISSION STATEMENT
The Division of Health Sciences will provide New Zealand society and other communities
with a highly qualified workforce in the health professions. The Division will promote
health and health care through basic and applied research and academic and professional
leadership. This will be achieved through research-based undergraduate, postgraduate and
professional academic programmes of international standard in the health sciences and
related sciences. |
The Dunedin School of
Medicine and Christchurch and Wellington Schools
of Medicine & Health Sciences have close
functional relationships with the District Health
Boards in their area with a majority of academic
staff holding joint clinical appointments.
As well as the traditional undergraduate degree
programmes in Biomedical
Sciences, Dentistry, Medical
Laboratory Science, Medicine, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy the
Division offers a number of other undergraduate
degree programmes in Health Sciences including:
All the Division's professional undergraduate
programmes are accredited by recognised New Zealand
professional bodies and in most instances there
is also international recognition.
In recent years, as well as increasing the
number of postgraduate students studying for
traditional research degrees, there has been
a major expansion in the number and diversity
of students enrolled for postgraduate taught
courses within this Division. Many of these students
are active in the delivery of healthcare and
are enrolled part-time in our courses, some of
which are available by distance education.

in gaining research funding from external sources
for this purpose and many of our research projects
are leaders in their relevant fields internationally.
